Helen Booth

AHPRA Registered Psychologist and Member of the Australia Association of Psychologists Inc. (AAPI), with extensive and varied experience within the government, education and private sectors including roles in assessment, team management, and private counselling.

My Story

My vocational journey has included brief forays into other disciplines including biomedical science, early childhood education, primary education and quite a few years in administration, customer service and event management.

I stepped onto the path of Psychology in 2003 with undergraduate studies and a postgraduate diploma, eventually leading to a publication in the Journal of Cross Cultural Psychology in 2011 - The Effects of Cognitive Appraisals of Communication Competence in Conflict Interactions: A Study Involving Western and Chinese Cultures

After completing my formal studies in 2007, I had the privilege of being accepted into a paid two year internship with a federal department. I remained with the department for a further 6 years after obtaining my registration. During this time I saw the above article (finally!) published and worked in a variety of locations throughout western Sydney. My work allowed me to support individuals from refugee populations, individuals experiencing complex physical and mental health concerns and providing short term counselling and psychometric assessment. I also worked in a multidisciplinary team of allied health professionals and designed and facilitated workshops for professional teams within the department. These workshops focussed on healthy psychological coping and promoting a positive work environment, something I have come to value exceptionally.

In 2015, I began private counselling work and had the honour of working alongside the very first walk and talk Psychologist in Australia until 2018. Throughout my years as a contracted Psychologist I have developed my professional skills extensively and have found passion and joy in my work with individuals as they journey through their own experiences. Life feels a lot like the waves in the ocean and learning to ride them through ups and downs is always a little easier with support along the way.

2020 saw me take on a maternity leave cover role as a full time in a School Psychologist. The position provided me with valuable insight into working within a small community and direct experience in supporting students, families and teachers as they navigate psychological needs in the school environment. I remained on staff for a further two years to continue supporting the community and I have continued to provide occasional support despite stepping back into my walk and talk work to support the growth of Scenic Psychology.
